Description

Specimen records of Order Hymenoptera of the Botswana National Museum were digitized as part of the efforts of the African Insect Atlas Project (BID-AF2015-0134-REG). The dataset contains 2158 records belonging to 22 families. Specimen records include some accepted names and synonyms, all of which were collected from 1970’s to date. Specimens were collected from different parts of Sub Saharan Africa, with records from Botswana standing at 2078, while the remaining specimens were collected from Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Around 40% of the Hymenoptera records in the collection were received by the museum as a donation from the former Entomologist Per Forchhammer.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 2,158 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

Data was extracted from specimen labels of Order Hymenoptera in the Botswana National Museum entomology collection. The information was captured electronically in Ms Excel database. Data cleaning was done through Ms Excel. Taxonomic checks, status and authorship were verified using Catalog of Life Matching Service, Encyclopedia of Life database, AntWeb.org, Discoverlife.org and Waspweb.org

Study Extent Data was collected from specimen records in the entomology collection of the Botswana National Museum. The collection was incorporated into the museum either as a donation or through collecting expeditions. Most specimens were collected from Botswana, while other specimens were collected from Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Method step description:

  1. 1. Digitization: Data was captured from specimen labels of Hymenoptera in the Botswana National Museum entomology collection. Data was captured in Ms Excel database and aligned with the Darwin Core Terms. 2. Data Quality: Data cleaning was carried out using Ms Excel database system. 3. Taxonomy Checks: Taxonomic checks, status and authorship were verified using tools such as Catalog of Life Matching Service, Encyclopedia of Life database, AntWeb.org, Discoverlife.org and Waspweb.org. 4. Publishing: Dataset was published on the GBIF Platform
